There are venues that look beautiful. And then there are venues that feel like something out of a dream. Goodwood Estate in winter is firmly in the second category.
La Fête founder Charlotte Ricard-Quesada was invited to experience Goodwood at Christmas – a private planner event that took in the estate’s most extraordinary spaces, ending with dinner in the Egyptian Hall. It was, she says, the kind of evening that stays with you. This is her account of why Goodwood in winter should be at the very top of your list.
First Impressions: An Estate That Transforms in Winter

Arriving at Goodwood in December is an experience in itself. The estate sits in the heart of the West Sussex countryside, close enough to London to be accessible and just an hours drive from Gatwick Airport.
The grounds are expansive, the air is clean, and in winter, when frost settles across the lawns and the house is lit for the season, it has a quality that is almost impossible to put into words.
Still family-owned by the Duke of Richmond, Goodwood retains a warmth and character that sets it apart from grander but more impersonal venues. It does not feel like a hotel. It feels like someone’s home – an exceptionally beautiful, history-filled home that happens to be available for the most special of occasions.
The Spaces: Made for Winter Celebrations

The Egyptian Hall is the jewel in Goodwood’s crown, and nowhere does it shine more brightly than at Christmas. Floor-to-ceiling portraits of the Richmond family line the walls, gold ornamentation catches the candlelight, and the scale of the room lends itself to exactly the kind of grand, theatrical dinner that a winter wedding deserves.
We had the pleasure of dining here during our visit, and it is one of those spaces that genuinely silences a room the moment you walk in.
Whether dressed with lush green foliage, candlelight and winter botanicals, or styled more formally with deep seasonal colours, the Egyptian Hall requires very little to feel extraordinary.

Beyond the main house, the wider Goodwood estate offers an impressive range of spaces for different moments across a multi-day winter celebration.
The Bar & Grill, dressed for Christmas with candlelight and festive table settings, is perfect for more relaxed gatherings – a wedding breakfast, a pre-ceremony brunch, or an intimate family dinner the evening before.
The Experience: Beyond the Ceremony

One of the things that makes Goodwood so exceptional for multi-day celebrations is the breadth of experiences the estate can offer your guests.
During our visit, we were taken out in the estate’s iconic vintage 1970s Land Rovers for an off-road drive through the grounds – which captures the spirit of Goodwood perfectly.
It is a place where heritage, adventure and luxury exist comfortably side by side.
For winter weddings in particular, the estate’s character lends itself to exactly the kind of layered, immersive celebration that modern couples are looking for.
Guests can explore the grounds on a crisp winter morning, enjoy a long and leisurely lunch, and then dress for an evening in the Egyptian Hall.
There is a natural rhythm to a Goodwood wedding weekend that is genuinely rare.

We also had the privilege of being received in the Duke of Richmond’s private quarters – a space not open to the public, used for private dinners and intimate gatherings.
And the Shell Grotto, which we were taken to see, is one of the most extraordinary hidden spaces we have encountered at any venue in the UK.
Neither will feature in any standard venue tour, which is a reminder of just how much there is to discover at Goodwood when you know the estate well.
An Entrance to Remember

If you want a wedding arrival that your guests will talk about for years, Goodwood delivers in a way that very few venues can match.
The approach to the house, flanked by fireworks against the night sky, is the kind of moment that exists beyond styling and planning.
It is simply, magnificently, Goodwood.
