The invitation is the first impression of an event and calligraphy makes it so much more impactful and personal. I always opt to include calligraphy whenever I can, from save the dates to place cards, as it has the power to turn a simple piece of paper into a memento. It’s without a doubt a unique art form and in order to understand it better, I decided to undertake a calligraphy class hosted by Merrie & Bright Calligraphy. I didn’t know what to expect from it, as the most I had ever done was play around with souvenir quill and inkwell sets as a child.
But any apprehension I might’ve had disappeared as soon as I started the session. It didn’t feel like re-learning to write as I had originally thought, but more like learning to draw a series of letters and patterns. Any wobble or hesitation was perceptible in the writing, but as my confidence grew, so did the fluidity of the lines. It was also incredibly soothing.
What I wanted to achieve from the course was a basic how-to, so that I could better understand the art form and in a pinch, know how to solve a calligraphy-related emergency. It sounds unlikely, but you never know, especially as it touches every kind of event and many different mediums.
I’d definitely recommend trying a class, if only to expand your horizons and try something new. Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent!
